Abajo, un punto exacto: at.
Tiempo
IN
in May · in 2026 · in the morning · in summer
ON
on Monday · on 5 May · on Friday night
AT
at 5 o'clock · at night · at noon
Lugar
IN
in Madrid · in Mexico · in a box · in the car
ON
on the table · on the wall · on the bus
AT
at home · at the bus stop · at the door
In, on, at para el tiempo
at 5 o'clock · at noon · at night · at Christmas
- Preposición
- at
on Monday · on 5 May · on my birthday · on Friday night
- Preposición
- on
in May · in 2026 · in summer · in the morning
- Preposición
- in
- Se usa con
- meses, años, estaciones, siglos, partes del día
- Español
- en mayo · en 2026 · en verano · por la mañana
Algunos detalles que confunden:
- Las partes del día llevan in: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening. La excepción es at night.
- Si añades un día, cambia a on: on Monday morning, on Friday evening.
- Weekend: en inglés británico, at the weekend; en americano, on the weekend.
- Christmas: at Christmas (la época) pero on Christmas Day (el día 25).
In, on, at para el lugar
In, on, at de lugar: tres escenas
IN
The ball is in the box.
ON
The book is on the table.
AT
She is at the bus stop.
in the box · in Madrid · in Mexico · in the car · in bed
- Preposición
- in
- Idea
on the table · on the wall · on the bus · on the second floor
- Preposición
- on
- Idea
at home · at the bus stop · at the door · at school · at work
- Preposición
- at
- Idea
Transporte: on o in
- On para transportes en los que puedes ponerte de pie o moverte: on the bus, on the train, on the plane, on a bike.
- In para espacios pequeños, donde te sientas: in the car, in a taxi.
At: lugares como “punto de actividad”
Usamos at cuando importa la actividad que haces allí, no el edificio: at school (estudiando), at work, at the doctor’s, at the cinema, at a party, at the airport. There are 30 desks in the school.
on time
- Significado
- puntual
- Ejemplo
- The train was on time.
in time
- Significado
- a tiempo (con margen)
- Ejemplo
- We got there in time for dinner.
at the end of
- Significado
- al final de (un momento concreto)
- Ejemplo
- At the end of the film, he cries.
in the end
- Significado
- finalmente, al final
- Ejemplo
- In the end, we stayed at home.
on TV / on the radio
- Significado
- en la tele / en la radio
- Ejemplo
- There's a good film on TV tonight.
on the phone
- Significado
- al teléfono
- Ejemplo
- She's on the phone.
at the moment
- Significado
- ahora mismo
- Ejemplo
- I'm busy at the moment.
in the middle of
- Significado
- en medio de
- Ejemplo
- He is in the middle of the road.
On time y in time se confunden mucho. La diferencia: on time = a la hora exacta prevista; in time = con tiempo suficiente antes de que sea tarde. The film started at 8 and I arrived on time. / I ran and got to the station in time for the last train.
Diferencias entre inglés británico y americano
- Fin de semana: UK at the weekend / US on the weekend.
- Calle: UK in the street / US on the street.
- Hospital: UK in hospital / US in the hospital.
- Equipo, fila: in a team, in a queue (UK) / in line (US).
No te obsesiones: ambas variantes se entienden. Lo importante es ser coherente.
Errores típicos de los hispanohablantes
- Traducir «en» siempre por in. ❌ I’ll see you in Monday. → ✅ on Monday. ❌ I’m in home. → ✅ I’m at home.
- «A las» con in. ❌ The class is in 5 o’clock. → ✅ at 5 o’clock.
- Añadir on con next. ❌ on next week → ✅ next week.
- «In the night». ❌ I sleep in the night. → ✅ I sleep at night. (In the night también existe, pero se refiere a un episodio concreto: He woke up in the night, «se despertó durante la noche»).
- Olvidar el transporte. ❌ I’m in the bus. → ✅ I’m on the bus.
- «In» con fechas. ❌ in 5 May → ✅ on 5 May.
- «To home». Con go home no hay preposición: ❌ I go to home → ✅ I go home.
